When does skin become 'mature'?

One of the most frequent questions we get from  customers  is “when does skin become ‘mature’ and require an approach that supports the physiological signs associated with ageing?”

Unfortunately there is no one guaranteed response to this question. There is so much more to consider when thinking about “mature skin” than just age. Lifestyle, diet and environment play a massive part. Someone aged 40+ living in a city environment, working long hours in an office, who has a poor diet, travels frequently, experiences high stress levels, drinks too much alcohol and caffeine and not enough water, is overexposed to the sun every holiday, is prone to hormonal swings and doesn’t get enough sleep will have a very different skin to someone of the same age who lives in a rural area, is not over exposed to the elements, eats a nutritious essential fatty acid-rich diet, regularly exercises, is not overtly stressed or anxious, sleeps well, drinks alcohol in moderation, drinks a healthy intake of water, has no issues with swinging hormones and doesn’t sunbathe.

It is also very evident that the way we treat our skin in our teens, 20’s and 30’s impacts our skin in our 40s and 50s and so on. Making sure the body is hydrated is fundamentally important, as is reducing the effect of overexposure to the elements, eating a balanced and nutritious diet, and keeping stress levels and hormonal surges in check. Of course the skincare we use does greatly affect how healthy and vital our skin is, but ultimately so much of how we look and feel comes down to good lifestyle and keeping our lives balanced.

There is nothing negative about getting older. It is a wonderful process and another stage in an unfolding story - something to embrace and enjoy. Certainly a person who feels vital and energised will echo this inner radiance in the way they smile, their eyes sparkle and their skin glows. They may have some lines and wrinkles but they look so beautiful and radiant. This is the best way to age, rather than trying to fight against the inevitable. Beauty comes from putting your best foot forward and living a fulfilled and dynamic life.

We hate to say it, but not a single product on the market is going to ‘turn back’ time. However, using good skincare that supports the process of ageing is important part of your daily routine. Cleansing and exfoliation is unfortunately one thing that we tend to forget about as we get older. It all becomes about what latest high tech serum or moisturiser is going to reverse the effects of ageing. Forgetting the cleansing ritual frequently leads to very dry, depleted and lack lustre skin with underlying congestion (aka blackhead and blocked pores). So if there is one thing you want to change to support mature skin make sure you start with cleansing thoroughly every evening and exfoliating at least once per week. This will ensure that your skin is effectively purified while giving a boost to cell turnover which unfortunately slows down as we age. As a guide, you should clean your face for as long as you clean your teeth. Massage the cleanser into the skin (if you are using a naturally active nutrient-rich product this will allow all the nourishing ingredients to absorb down into the skin, and also stimulate circulation to improve radiance) and ideally remove with a muslin cloth soaked in warm water for optimum benefit.

Look for a cleanser rich in essential fatty acids and some fruit enzymes to help stimulate cell turnover. Our Bio-Cellular Super Cleanse does just that. Containing Argan, Ubuntu Baobab and Macadamia Oil it is rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 and Malic Acid and Vitamin C to stimulate cell turnover and brighten the complexion.    Bio Cellular super cleanse group

Facial Glow bottle For your weekly exfoliation our best-selling Facial Glow Radiance Peel is such a fantastic product as it exfoliates while also nurturing and nourishing the skin. It is literally packed with a ‘who’s who’ of active natural ingredients: Vitamin A, C, E and Pomegranate for anti-oxidant protection; Apple Serum, Papaya, Orange Peel, Tangerine and Jojoba Beads to stimulate cell turnover; KOMBUCHKA™ for radically improving radiance and vitality and Manuka Honey, Macadamia and Olive Oil to nourish.

When it comes to serum and moisturiser, mature skin needs something that targets all the physiological signs associated with ageing and has a deep-penetrating effect. Dealing with only one of the issues that aggress mature skin (eg collagen production) is not as effective as dealing with the whole physiological process. Applying a product that contains peptides and collagen will help address collagen and elastin synthesis but it won’t be anywhere near as effective as if you use a product that also works on enhancing cellular metabolism, reducing free radical damage, and boosting the hydration and moisture levels in the skin.

With this in mind, we created the Elemental Herbology Age Support range, to offer comprehensive support for mature skin. Our Bio-Cellular Matrix Serum has an incredibly light molecular structure that helps to drive the actives into the skin to work on a much deeper level than a moisturiser. This has more of a pronounced effect on the barrier function and protection against the external environment.

The Bio-Cellular Matrix Serum contains a wealth of ingredients specifically designed to work with mature skin on an advanced level. Beuplex®VH a multi-vitamin complex it helps to combat free-radicals and supports the synthesis of collagen; Instensyl® helps to promote lifting and smoothing effects; Matrixyl®Synthe’6™ a powerful peptide complex to help even out the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; Green Tea and Raspberry Stem Cells help to improve the texture of the skin and reduce free-radical damage, Soluble Collagen rich in proteins and amino acids helps to improve hydration and soften and smooth the skin; Pearl Powder helps to increase luminosity; Guarana rich in caffeine helps to stimulate circulation and absorption of actives; Olive Squalane, Rose and Frankincense condition and soften the skin and Echium Oil, rich in Essential Fatty Acids helps to intensively moisturise and nourish.
