Magnesium...are you getting enough? by Sara Jackson

Do you get mad chocolate cravings, muscle cramps, anxiety, irritability, mood
swings, trouble getting your z’s and constipation from time to time? If any of these
common complaints are ringing your bell then you may be low in magnesium.
In fact, it’s one of the most common minerals for people to be lacking. Magnesium
is required by the body for over 300 different enzymatic processes around the body
to work optimally.

Magnesium is important for the nervous system and for muscle function. It
contributes to a healthy immune system, keeps the heart beat stable and
contributes to strong bones. Its also required to even out blood glucose levels and
helps with energy and protein production within the body.

Magnesium is also key to great skin. There have been several studies that have
shown that if you include plenty of magnesium in your diet, you may be less likely to
suffer from fine lines and wrinkles. If you seriously lack magnesium, then you may
have decreased fatty acids on your skin which often equates to dry and inflamed

So how can you boost your daily magnesium intake in one fell swoop all before
9am? Have a green smoothie for breakfast.

I am a massive smoothie fan, especially green smoothies and the best thing is that
you can load them up with magnesium rich ingredients like leafy greens, avocado,
nuts and seeds and with the right combinations they're so delicious. Everyone
seems to want to dust off their blender along with setting their January New Years
resolutions, so if people are doing anything positive for their health, then I’m
definitely jumping on board!

Why do I love smoothies so much? Basically in one glass you can be drinking at
least 2 or 3 portions of the daily greens we all should have to look and feel our best.
I see a lot of people in clinic, and a lot of those people actually already eat a pretty
balanced diet, but I am yet to meet anyone who consumes as many greens as we
all need.

Stay tuned for my next post for Elemental Herbology as I’ll be sharing one of the
most popular recipes from my SJ Health 30 day Smoothie Hormone Challenge. The
programme is one of the easiest (and yummiest!) ways to transform your health,
achieve glowing skin and reset your hormones.
